Based on the NHS Choices website, some examples of starchy foods are rice, pasta, oats, barley, potato, cereal and bread. The American Diabetes Association provides a list of starchy vegetables that includes parsnip, pumpkin, butternut squash, acorn squash, green peas, plantain, and corn.

Starch is the most common type of carbohydrate in a person’s diet. Starchy foods are an excellent source of energy, fiber, iron and other essential vitamins and minerals, making them an important part of a healthy and balanced diet. Gram for gram, starchy foods contain over 50 percent fewer calories than fatty foods. Using added fats when cooking and serving starchy foods is what tends to add to their caloric content.
