What is the Eye of Mordor?

The Eye of Mordor is an alternate name for the Eye of Sauron in "The Lord of the Rings" by J. R. R. Tolkien. Also known as the Lidless Eye or the Great Eye, the Eye of Mordor was the primary symbol associated with Sauron.
While it is not clear in the "Lord of the Rings" novels whether the Eye of Sauron refers to a physical eye, in the "Lord of the Rings" movies it is always depicted as such. In the books, Frodo sees a vision of the Eye in the Mirror of Galadriel, experiencing it as yellow and rimmed with fire.
