Eyeballs grow until a person is 13 years old. The eyes measure approximately 16 to 17 millimeters vertically at birth and 24 millimeters as an adult.
An adult eye weighs about 0.25 ounces. Most growth occurs during the first three years of life. The eye has three layers. The outer layer has the cornea and sclera and is called the fibrous tunic. The middle layer has the choroid, ciliary body and iris. It's called either the vascular tunic or uvea. The inner layer is the retina. Vision quality tends to deteriorate with age, and there are many disorders that affect the eyes, such as myopia, astigmatism and macular degeneration.
