An E-ZPass works on any toll roads that have designated E-ZPass lanes. The states with toll roads participating in the E-ZPass programs are mainly in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic portions of the United States.

As of 2015, northeastern states that accept E-ZPass include Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Mid-Atlantic states in which drivers may use E-ZPass include Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Motorists can also use E-ZPass on Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina toll roads. Illinois, Indiana and Ohio are other states in which drivers can use E-ZPass for toll payment.

The driver attaches the E-ZPass transponder to the front windshield or license plate of his car. As he passes through the toll plaza, an antenna collects information from the transponder and initiates an automatic debit of the toll amount from the E-ZPass holder's account.
