In all Windows versions, the function key F2 is used to rename a highlighted file, folder or icon. F2 can also accomplish several other tasks when used in combination with other keys.
For instance, Alt + Ctrl + F2 can be used to open the document window in Microsoft Word, while Ctrl + F2 opens the print preview window.
If a file or folder is selected, F2 can be used to rename it. F2 is also among the keys that can be used to enter CMOS during the startup process.
In Linux systems, F2 used with specific key combinations can accomplish various functions. For instance, Ctrl + Alt + F2 switches between text consoles while Alt + F2 is a shortcut for many things, most notably quitting a hanging program.
