Sulphur belongs to the family of elements called Chalcogens. It is a pale yellow non-metallic brittle solid with atomic number 16 and atomic weight 32.06 grams per mole. The symbol for sulphur is S and its electron configuration is [Ne] 3s23p4.

Sulphur is a solid at room temperature and does not dissolve in water. It is placed in group 16 or the p-block and period 3 of the periodic table. It is highly reactive and melts at 329.38 degrees Fahrenheit. Eight atoms of sulphur combine to form a cyclic molecule of sulphur. Rhombic, plastic and monoclinic sulphur are the main allotropes of sulphur. Sulphur is found in hot springs and near volcanic eruptions.
