Is sulfur a family name?

Sulfur is not a family name. Rather, sulfur belongs to the family chalcogen, sometimes called the oxygen family. Other elements in the same family are polonium, selenium, tellurium and oxygen.

The chalcogen family is in group 16 of the periodic table of elements. The elements become increasingly more like metals the higher their atomic number. Oxygen, with an atomic number of eight, and sulfur, with an atomic number of 16, are nonmetals. Selenium, with atomic number 34, and tellurium, with atomic number 52, are semi-conductors. Polonium, with atomic number 84, is a metal. Conversely, their electronegativities decrease as their atomic numbers increase.
