The trumpet is a higher-register member of the brass instrument family. Brass instruments' defining qualities include a cup-shaped mouthpiece, slides, valves and a brass body.
A brass instrument's typical structure involves a long brass tube with one end broadened into the shape of a bell. The brass family includes five main instrument types: the trumpet/cornet, the French horn, the trombone, the baritone/euphonium and the tuba/sousaphone. Sound is produced in these instruments by pursing the lips together and buzzing into the mouthpiece, creating a vibration of the air inside the brass tubes. This vibrating air can be channeled or elongated by use of valves or slides.
