What family does titanium belong to?

Titanium belongs to group 4 and is a transition metal. Discovered in 1791 by William Gregor, its atomic number is 22. Shiny and dark gray in color, this metal is the ninth most common element in the earth's crust.

Transition metals have a number of common characteristics. They have both high melting and high boiling points, and they are very hard but malleable. Common transition metals other than titanium include iron, cobalt, zinc, silver, gold, tungsten, chromium, copper and platinum. Titanium is used in the aerospace industry due to its ability to withstand very high and very low temperatures and in the medical field because of its non-toxicity.
