The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend breastfeeding for at least 12 months, and longer thereafter as long as mother and baby are both comfortable with it. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding through six months of age.
Continued breastfeeding along with complementary foods is recommended through age two or beyond. Breastfeeding has many benefits to infants and toddlers. The immunity they receive from breast milk helps prevent illness. People who were breastfed as children tend to have fewer problems with weight management as adults. The World Health Organization uses growth patterns of breastfed children as the standard for growth measurement.
