Do you need a license to be a home daycare provider in Virginia?

Home day care providers in the state of Virginia who care for six to 12 children, excluding the caregiver's children, must have a license. A license is also required if the caregiver cares for more than four children under the age of two, including the caregiver's own children.
Home day care is considered to occur over a time frame of 24 hours or less. The "caregiver's own children" include any child that resides in the home of the caregiver. The State Board of Social Services sets the standards for home day care, and the Division of Licensing Programs enforces them.
