Some famous African-American scientists include George Washington Carver and Mae C. Jemison. Carver was a botanist and inventor who developed peanut butter, while Jemison became an astronaut.

George Washington Carver spent much of his career studying peanuts and finding additional uses for this nut. He worked with Booker T. Washington at the Tuskegee Institute, encouraged farmers to rotate crops and developed more than 100 uses for sweet potatoes.

Mae C. Jemison was the first African-American woman to become an astronaut and to travel into space. Before becoming an astronaut, she worked as a doctor for the Peace Corps and researched medical issues in Africa.
