Some famous past Rhodes Scholars include President Bill Clinton, talk show host Rachel Maddow and former NBA and New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley. Bradley was awarded the scholarship in 1965, while Maddow became the first openly gay Rhodes Scholar in U.S. history.

Additional famous Rhodes Scholars included musician Kris Kristofferson, politician Bobby Jindal, feminist advocate Naomi Wolf, politician Cory Booker and former presidential candidate Wesley Clark.

The prestigious Rhodes Scholarship award, which started in 1902, is awarded to up to 90 students a year. The award provides funding for two years at Oxford University. The award's name comes from South African diamond businessman Cecil Rhodes.
