How far off the grid is the Kilcher homestead?

The Kilcher family homestead is located at 54860 East End Road in Homer, Alaska, which is about 12 miles from the center of town. Homer has a population of about 5,400 people.

Although Homer restricts the size of retail establishments to less than 45,000 square feet, it does have a supermarket as well as several restaurants and shops. The town is also know as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World. The small, coastal feel of Homer draws weekend visitors. Tourism is a major industry for the town. Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, is approximately four hours by car from Homer.
