The common privet, Ligustrum vulgare, is a deciduous shrub that quickly produces a dense hedge if planted in mass. Privet shrubs, featuring glossy leaves, white summer flowers and black autumn berries, attain a height of 10 feet. Forsythias and mock oranges are also fast-growing flowering shrubs that make excellent hedges.
A red twig dogwood hedge provides something to view year-round. This deciduous shrub produces spring blooms, variegated green and white summer leaves and berries in late summer and autumn. During the winter, the bare twigs remain red against a winter landscape. Also suitable for a fast-growing hedge is the easily-grown hardy hibiscus, often called the rose-of-Sharon shrub. It has an upright form with trumpet-shaped summer flowers in white, pink, lavender, rose and purple. For year-round privacy, zebrina western red cedar is a compact evergreen shrub that quickly grows in a sunny location to 20 feet and features scale-like green leaves.
