The fastest typing speed ever recorded is 216 words per minute, as of 2015. The feat was performed on an IBM electric typewriter by Stella Pajunas in 1946.
Typist Barbara Blackburn achieved a peak typing speed of 212 words per minute in 2005 on a Dvorak simplified keyboard. Her average speed was 150 words per minute, and she reached 170 words per minute on shorter selections of text. These numbers are compared to average typing speeds for women of 37 words per minute, and average typing speeds for men of 44 words per minute. These numbers do not include stenotype keyboards, which are specially formulated to enhance the speed of the trained typist.
