As of 2014, the largest wave ever recorded was a tsunami that occurred at Lituya Bay, Alaska, according to Geology.com. The wave occurred during the night of July 9, 1958 and rose to over 1,720 feet in height.

The wave was created by a massive landslide that took place at the edge of a narrow bay after an earthquake. Lituya bay sits on the Fairweather fault, making earthquakes a common hazard for the area. According to Geology.com, the rockslide at the base of the bay dropped nearly 3,000 feet into the water, which was responsible for the extreme force of the wave as it traversed the entire inlet and swept away millions of trees.
