As of July 2014, the world record for riding the largest wave belongs to Garrett McNamara, who rode a wave officially listed in the Guinness Book of World Records at 78 feet in November 2011. McNamara's record, however, may have been bettered by two subsequent rides, both in 2013.
In January 2013, Garrett McNamara rode a wave estimated at 100 feet. Then in October 2013, Carlos Burle surfed a wave which was also estimated at 100 feet. Like McNamara's record ride, both of these waves occurred near Naraze, a small fishing village in Portugal. As of July 2014, both 100-foot rides await verification by the Guinness Book of World Records, so McNamara's 78-foot ride remains the official record.
