As of 2015, the most recent British sixpence coins, minted in 1970, show the profile of Queen Elizabeth II on the front and a floral design featuring a rose, thistle, shamrock and leek on the reverse. The diameter of this coin is 3/4 inch, and the coin's circumference is milled.
The reverse of the sixpence shows the words "six pence" along with the date of minting. The abbreviation Fid Def, short for the Latin phrase "fidei desfensor," meaning "defender of the faith," is also printed on the reverse. The last sixpence coins containing silver were minted in 1946; the most recent coins are made with cupronickel. The British sixpence is no longer circulated and is not considered legal tender.
