There are at least 438 agencies in the U.S. government, such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the State Department and the U.S. Mint. Other federal agencies include the Census Bureau, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration.

Federal agencies fall within the executive branch, and the president appoints their leaders. In 2013, the five largest agencies by number of employees were the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Army, the Navy, the Department of Homeland Security and the Air Force. Veterans Affairs had more than 337,000 employees, approximately 16 percent of the federal workforce.
