What federal office handles veteran eligibility for health care?

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is charged with overseeing the Veteran's Health Administration, which is the health care program for enrolled veterans. The VA establishes eligibility requirements and oversees enrollment.

The most basic eligibility requirement for VA health care is active military, naval or air service that did not end dishonorably. Veterans who enlisted after September 7, 1980, or began active duty after October 16, 1981, must have served at least 24 consecutive months, or the entire period they were called for active duty.

Information needed to apply includes proof of discharge papers, any other health insurance information, and income and financial information. Veterans may apply online, in person at a VA medical clinic, by telephone, or by U.S. Mail.
