What is a FEIN number?

A Federal Tax Identification Number is a nine-digit number that the Internal Revenue Service uses to identify a business entity. The IRS requires any business that has employees or operates under certain other conditions to file for a FEIN, and it offers the service for free.
A FEIN is the corporate equivalent of a Social Security number. It is issued to an entity, such as a corporation, a state or an individual, if the entity is required to pay withholding taxes on employees or if it meets other criteria. The IRS mandates that a corporation or a tax-exempt entity must be legally formed before it is allowed to file for a FEIN.
