What is a felony chart?

A felony chart is a tabular or graphical representation that indicates the typical, recommended or mandatory punishments associated with various crimes classified as felonies. The charts typically show minimum and maximum sentences or fines associated with each offense.

Some charts also show the applicable statute or section of the law that prescribes the sentence or defines the offense. Some felonies such as murder or manslaughter are charged by class or degree based on the seriousness or nature of the crime and may involve more serious punishments. Felony charts generally list the various degrees under which a person may be accused along with the minimum and maximum sentences for each degree or class of the crime. Felony charts may also have separate areas to distinguish sentences applied for people with no prior convictions and whether they have committed violent or non-violent offenses.
