What is a Fennec hare?

A fennec hare is an imaginary creature that was the subject of an April Fool's Day prank by Zooborns.com. The website's spoof announcement, "Endangered Fennec Hare Born at Korea Zoo," was accompanied by a picture which originated in a graphic arts contest on Worth1000.com.
On April 1, 2009, Zooborns.com announced the birth of a fennec hare at North Korea's Pyongyang People's Zoo. The accompanying text claimed that the fennec hare was one of the rarest animals on Earth and was native to the Iperian Steppe. While Pyongyang actually does have a zoo, the Iperian Steppe does not exist. The real fennec is a fox, not a hare.
