What is a fictitious business name statement?

A fictitious business name statement is a document filed with local government to register the name of a business, according to Nolo. In general, a business owner need not file a statement if he uses his last name as part of the business name.

A fictitious business name statement is also known as a DBA, or doing business as, statement. The statement is typically filed at the county level, though some states require filing at the state level, explains Nolo. Some states also require that the statement be published in an approved newspaper for a specified amount of time to complete the registration process.
