What does field mean in ICT?

In ICT, the term "field" refers to a unit of data. Any data comprising of a number of parts can be subdivided into fields or columns. ICT stands for information and communication technology.
Fields are the smallest units of information that can be accessed in a database system. A collection of many fields form a record, so without the fields there can be no records of data.
Only particular pieces of information need to be keyed into fields, otherwise they will not work. The majority of fields have certain properties that are affixed to them. For example, some fields require numerical input, whereas others require text. In ICT there are three types of fields: optional, calculated and required.
