Edward B. Titchener was primarily concerned with the field of psychology, especially the 19th-century branch known as structuralism. The bulk of his work was centered on the conscious and unconscious elements that go into decision-making and other mental processes.
Titchener took an approach to classifying the workings of the mind that was inspired by organic chemistry. Just as a chemist attempts to break a substance down into component elements, such as carbon or hydrogen, Titchener attempted to break down mental processes into component parts, such as rational thought, external sensations and subconscious urges. He is also known for coining the English word "empathy."
