The first eMachines desktop computers were the eTower models that debuted in late 1998 and early 1999. EMachines hoped these entry-level computers would help capture a 20 percent market share of homes that did not yet have a PC.
The eTower did not include a monitor and sold at $399, $499 and $599 price points, depending on its configuration. The base model, the 333i, featured a Cyrix processor, a 2-gigabyte hard drive, 32 megabytes of memory, and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, and included a $95 mail-in rebate offer for a 14-inch monitor. At a time when most computers cost more than twice as much, the eTower helped eMachines become one of the top-selling computer brands in the earliest part of the 21st century.
