What was the first film to win Best Movie at the Academy Awards?

"Wings" was the first film to win the Outstanding Picture award at the 1927/1928 Academy Awards. The movie was directed by William A. Wellman and released by Paramount Famous Lasky Corp (Paramount Pictures).

Set during World War I, "Wings" follows the romantic lives of Jack Powell and David Armstrong, two fighter pilot friends who love the same woman. Clara Bow, Charles Rogers and Richard Arlen star in the movie.

The first Academy Awards ceremony took place on May 16, 1929, at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Winners had been announced three months prior to the evening's events.

"Wings" also received an Academy Award for Engineering Effects at the same awards ceremony.
