The first helicopter was made in 1907 by Paul Cornu. However, it was unsuccessful and could not achieve flight. In 1924, a French inventor by the name of Etienne Oehmichen built the first helicopter that could fly.
Igor Sikorsky is often credited for developing helicopters. He was the first inventor to achieve commercial success with his designs. He designed the first helicopter used by the U.S. Army. In 1958, Igor Sikorsky's company built the first helicopter that could take off from and land on water. The Italian inventor, Leonardo Da Vinci, created the first conceptual drawings of flying machines in the 1500's.
