The first DVD player was made around the year 1994 by Tatung Limited, based in Taiwan. It was, however, not available to the public until September 1996 due to copyright protection issues.
By 1997, DVD players were also available in the U.S. During this time, a DVD player could cost up to $1,000. They became cheaper with time, costing under $100 by the year 2000. The price dropped further to only about $50 by the year 2003. As of 2014, there are over 1,000 models of DVD players and over 100 companies manufacturing them. Among the main companies manufacturing DVD players are Fujistu, Toshiba, Sony, Hitachi, Panasonic and Pioneer.
