The first letter in the Hebrew alphabet is alef. Because beit is the second letter, Hebrew speakers sometimes use the term "alefbet" in reference to their alphabet. There are 27 letters in the Hebrew alphabet, written right to left.

Like other Semitic writing systems, Hebrew contains no vowels. To aid in the pronunciation of words, written Hebrew contains a system of dots and dashes known as "nikkud" above, below and inside letters. The "nikkud" typically represent vowels.

Every letter in the Hebrew alphabet has a corresponding numerical value. These values are in use as numerals, as in the system devised by the Romans.
