Herbert Hoover was the first president born west of the Mississippi River. He was born in West Branch, Iowa, on Aug. 10, 1874. He governed the United States between 1929 and 1933.
After him, seven presidents came from west of the Mississippi River, a sign that those once lightly populated areas were filling with new people. The second was Harry Truman, who was born in Missouri. The next was Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was born in Texas. Lyndon B. Johnson was also born in Texas, while his successor, Richard Nixon, was born in California. Gerald Ford was born in Nebraska, Bill Clinton in Arkansas and Barack Obama in Hawaii.
