The first television to offer 4K video was LG's 84-inch LM9600 mode. It was released for sale in the United States in October 2012.

As of 2015, 4K technology is the highest broadcast resolution available for television and other media devices. The technology was developed by the Japanese broadcasting firm, Nippon Hoso Kyokai.

Referred to by LG as ultra-definition, the LM9600 is a UDTV that produces a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. This format is slightly lower than the 4K cinematic standard. The second company to release 4K video for television was Sony. Its 84-inch XBR 84x900 model became available in the market in November 2012.
