What was the first toy that was advertised on TV?

The first toy ever advertised on television was Mr. Potato Head. This still-popular children's toy was created in 1949 by George Lerner, made and distributed by Hasbro in 1952 and featured in the first television commercial promoting a toy that same year.

Hasbro exceeded $4 million in sales in only a few months, encouraging other toy retailers to get in on the action. The original Mr. Potato Head toy contained 28 different facial features to mix and match on a real potato for unique looks. A plastic potato was added to the set in 1964. Over the years a Mrs. Potato Head, two children and various accessories arrived on the scene. Mr. Potato Head was one of the toys in the "Toy Story" movies.
