As of 2014, no woman has been to the moon. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova, and the first American woman in space was Sally Ride.
Valentina Tereshkova was born on March 6, 1937, in Maslennikovo in the central part of Russia. She was chosen out of 400 volunteers to pilot the Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963. On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space when she flew with the shuttle Challenger. One notable prospect for the first woman to the moon, according to The Space Review, would be Eileen Collins. She was the first woman to command a shuttle mission in 1999 and is a highly skilled pilot. However, NASA currently has no plans to continue flight missions to the moon.
