The first woman to wear trousers was Elizabeth Smith Miller who wore Turkish-inspired trousers in 1851 and was an advocate and supporter of women's rights. This outfit, later called the Bloomer costume, was worn by many early women's right proponents and was popularized by Amelia Bloomer through the journal "Lily."
The Bloomer outfit was initially developed by Miller in disgust with the constraining limits of the standard long skirt. Her change in outfit was supported by both her family and her husband. However, Miller herself eventually abandoned the usage of the Bloomer due to being "a victim to [her] love for beauty."
