How do you fix a cigarette burn on a couch?

To fix a cigarette burn, make a patch from the same fabric as the couch, then use fabric glue to attach it over the damaged area. Since the damage is usually minimal, patching a cigarette burn is easier and more affordable than having to reupholster the entire couch, or getting a new one. Make sure to have a pair of small scissors to cut the patch fabric, extra stuffing material, a toothpick or Q-Tip, some fabric glue, and a pair of tweezers on hand before beginning the project.

The following method is a simple way of applying a patch over a cigarette burn:

1. Clip the burned edges

Use a manicure nipper or scissors and carefully snip away the dark, burn-damaged portions. Remove only the stained parts to keep the hole as inconspicuous as possible.

2. Cut a fabric patch

Excess couch fabric can be used to create the patch, and is usually found on the back or underneath it, where the folds are sewn. Using material from these areas ensures that the piece removed will not be noticeable or detract from the look of the furniture. To make the patch, cut out a portion that is at least 1/4- to 1/2-inch bigger than the hole that needs covering.

3. Insert the stuffing

If the hole is deep, use extra stuffing to fill it up, so that the area does not appear sunken in.

4. Apply fabric glue

Use a small tool, such as a Q-Tip or a toothpick, to apply fabric glue on the inside edges of the hole. Apply the glue carefully, as to not get it anywhere else on the couch.

5. Attach the patch

With a pair of small tweezers, insert the patch inside the hole and work it to spread and properly patch the hole from the inside. Place a piece of parchment paper on top of the hole and cover with something heavy to keep the patch and the hole pressed together. Allow some time for the glue to cure, before using the couch.
