How do you fix a clogged sink?

Unclog a sink by applying duct tape over the overflow hole, removing the drain plug and using a plunger to dislodge the clog. Replace the stopper, and remove the tape from the overflow after clearing the drain.
- Cover the overflow hole
If the sink has an overflow drain, the force produced by the plunger leaks out the hole. Stop the leak by drying the area around the overflow with a towel and covering the hole with a piece of duct tape.
- Remove the drain plug
Lift the plug from the drain. If it does not lift, unscrew the retaining nut on the drain, and pull the drain plug lever out just enough to lift the plug. Tighten the retaining nut back in place before plunging.
- Use the plunger
Choose a cup plunger with a flat bottom for the sink. Place the cup over the drain, and ensure it makes a good seal. Push the plunger down and pull it back up quickly to dislodge the material causing the plug. Continue the process until the sink begins to drain.
- Replace the stopper
Replace the sink stopper. If necessary, loosen the retaining nut and pull the lever out before dropping the stopper in place. Push the lever back through the hole in the bottom of the plug, and tighten the nut again. Remove the duct tape from the overflow.
