To fix a stinky sink drain, flush it with baking soda and vinegar. Unscrew the sink trap slip nuts, remove the trap, scrub it, brush the pipes, and remount the trap, This 90-minute process requires baking soda, a bucket, a wrench and a pipe brush.
- Flush the drain
Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the drain, and rinse it out with hot water.
- Remove the trap
Place a bucket beneath the J-shaped pipe located below the sink. Use a wrench to loosen the slip nuts, finish loosening them by hand, and remove the J-shaped sink trap.
- Scrub the trap
Rinse the trap thoroughly, take it to another sink, and scrub it with hot water until it is free of food particles and does not have an unpleasant odor.
- Scrub the pipes
Use a wire pipe brush to clean the exposed pipes that connect to the trap. This removes soap scum and the malodorous food residue that contributes to drain odor.
- Reinstall the sink trap
Slip the nuts over the ends of the trap, hold it in its proper position, and tighten the nuts with your hands. Finish tightening them with the wrench to ensure that a watertight seal is created.
