What flavor is the Shamrock Shake?

McDonald's annual St. Patrick's Day milkshake is known as the Shamrock Shake and is said to have a slightly minty flavor. The shake originated in the 1970s and was called the St. Patrick's Day Shake.
For many diners, the minty flavor may take a backseat to the shake's other qualities, like its bright green color. Though this seasonal promotion has become beloved for McDonald's customers, only some of the chain's U.S. locations carried the shake until McDonald's made it nationally available in 2012. Savvy diners who ask for a McLeprechaun Shake may be able to get their minty Shamrock Shake mixed with a chocolate shake for a new blend of flavors.
