One way of following up on Wisconsin state tax return refunds is to use the Look Up feature on the Wisconsin Department of Revenue website at WI.gov. The status of the refunds can also be checked via the Department of Revenue's app for iOS and Android or over the phone, notes WI.gov.
As of 2015, when checking Wisconsin tax refund status on the telephone, the numbers to dial are (608) 266-8100 in Madison and (414) 227-4907 in Milwaukee. When calling from other areas, dial (866) WIS-RFND (947-7363). Whether checking online or on the telephone, the taxpayer must have a copy of the tax return on hand to verify information, states WI.gov.
The following shows one way of checking a tax refund status online via the Wisconsin Department of Revenue website.
- Go to the website
- Click on the Individual tab
- Click the Refund link
- Use the refund look up feature
Type WI.gov into the browser and press Enter.
Navigate to the individual taxpayer page by clicking on the Individual tab on the main menu of the home page.
On the individual taxpayer page, click on the Refund link below the Look Up option on the Online Services panel.
Select the desired tax year on the look up feature and type in the taxpayer's Social Security number or individual tax identification number. Type the refund claimed in whole dollars only, and then click submit.
