Some of the local food in Iceland include traditional fare, such as fresh and smoked salmon, stewed fish, smoked lamb, sheep's head, blood pudding and meat soup. Icelanders are also fond of eating bread and pastries, ice cream, sun-dried fish, hot dogs and "skyr," which is made from curdled milk.
The majority of the staple dishes in Iceland involve various types of seafood, which grow in abundance in the North Atlantic Ocean that encircles the island country. Mussels, arctic char, scampi and rotted shark meat are commonly eaten by the locals and tourists alike. Other popular snacks in Iceland include doughnuts, waffles, pancakes, oatmeal cakes and "love balls," which are known as "astarpungar."
