Mouse Trap Bait recommends using cat food, bird seed, oats, butter and different types of candy to lure mice to mouse traps. However, it is best to use minimal amounts of bait so mice must get closer to the traps and cannot simply steal the bait. Non-food items, such as dental floss and cotton balls, can also be used as bait in mouse traps.
