What is a mai tai cocktail?

A mai tai is a tropical cocktail that traditionally uses rum, orange Curacao, lime and orgeat. Famed bartender Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron Jr. created the mai tai in the 1930s.

To make a mai tai combine 2 ounces of aged rum, 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice, 1/2 ounce orange Curacao, 1/4 ounce simple syrup, 1/4 ounce orgeat and 1 cup crushed ice in a cocktail shaker. Reserve the juiced lime to use as garnish. Shake the mixture vigorously until combined and transfer to an old fashioned glass. Garnish the cocktail with a sprig of fresh mint and the juiced lime.
