Nitrogen is atomic number 7, which means it is made up of 7 protons and 7 electrons. It is the most abundant element in the Earth's atmosphere, taking up around 78 percent by volume of dry air. The Random House Dictionary lists ammonia, cyanide, fertilizer, dyes and cooling agents as common substances made from nitrogen.
