What is a Fortune 200 company?

A Fortune 200 company is a company that ranks within the top 200 spots on the Fortune 500 list. The Fortune 500 is an annual list published by Fortune magazine ranking the top 500 companies in the United States by their gross revenue.

Fortune magazine first compiled the 500 list in 1955. Fortune also publishes the Fortune 100 list, featuring the top 100 corporations from the 500 list and the Fortune 1000 list, an extended version of the list using the same ranking criteria. The Fortune Global list is a ranking of the top 500 international companies. The Forbes 500, Financial Times 500 and Business Week's Global 1000 are all similar lists that use different ranking criteria.
