Are fossil fuels renewable?

Fossil fuels are not renewable resources because there is a finite amount of them on Earth. Renewable resources only include resources that do not run out, and examples include wind and solar energy, or even wood since trees can be replanted. Fossil fuels cannot be readily replenished.

Fossil fuels are formed over millions of years in Earth's crust out of the carbon that makes up decaying biomass from dead plants and animals. Coal is formed from the remains of dead plants, while crude oil and natural gas originate from the remains of sea organisms. Though this process is ongoing, the slow rate of production is far outpaced by human consumption.
