Who founded the NAACP?

W.E. Du Bois, Archibald Grime, Ida B. Wells, Mary White Ovington, Henry Moskowitz, William Walling, Florence Kelly, Charles Russell and Oswald Villard founded the NAACP on Feb. 12, 1909. Of the group, W.E. Du Bois is generally regarded as most active leader and organizer of the organization.

The organization was formed following a race riot in Illinois in 1908. The NAACP was born at a subsequent conference for the key civil rights organization known as the Niagara Movement. NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The organization is headquartered in Maryland with offices in California, Georgia, Texas, Colorado, Michigan and New York, as of 2014.
