The four Great Lakes that touch the state of Michigan are Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Superior. Lake Ontario is the only Great Lake that does not border Michigan. Michigan's connection to four of the Great Lakes has given it the nickname "The Great Lakes State."
Lake Superior borders Michigan along the northern border of the region known as the Upper Peninsula. This area is separated from the rest of Michigan by Lakes Michigan and Huron. Lake Michigan is along the west coast of the lower portion of Michigan, while Lake Huron is on its east. Lake Erie borders Michigan along the southeast corner of the state.
